WHAT ARE ADVENTURE SETS?
Adventure sets are an easy, and in our opinion excellent, way of expanding your Isles of Terror experience!
The idea of adventure sets is that they each focus on a new setting, allowing players to delve into a new campaign and experience new adventures. The base game includes the original adventure set “The Dagger of Tza’Tanosh”, which provides the basic scenario for the game. This campaign contains 5 different adventures linked together. It also contains its own exploration deck and minions/bosses that are designed to fit the story.
“The Emerald Brood” features a story woven around the strange happenings on Black Rock Isle in 1771. It contains 3 new and unique adventures linked to another thrilling campaign. Additionally, it introduces new places to explore, a whole new set of exploration cards, new minions/bosses to encounter, a new terror board for cooperative and solo play and new mechanisms, such as portals and ritual markers. All of these components are used to reflect the new setting of the adventure set, so they replace the exploration deck, minions and places of the base game, e.g. the components used for “The Dagger of Tza’Tanosh”.
Preparing your game for a new adventure set is easy: just exchange the whole exploration and minion/boss deck of one adventure with those of the one you want to play. Then put the corresponding place tiles in the places bag and you are ready to go.
Of course, you could also combine any of the adventure sets and try out completely new ideas.
NEW MECHANISMS
“The Emerald Brood” features portals which adds a new facet to the game. With the help of portals, you will essentially be able to teleport to another portal on the isle allowing for quicker movement while at the same time proving additional danger with regards to enemy players or terrors.
There are also ritual tokens laid out when certain events happen. Those empower some of the minions you encounter or have additional effects on exploration cards and adventures. We hope that this helps you understand the idea behind adventure sets and that you are brave enough to face the horrors that awaits you in “The Emerald Brood”.
On to new explorations!
The chronicles and almanacs of 1771 record a series of strange happenings in and around Providence, New England. Citizens increasingly rebelled against the seemingly arbitrary edicts of their king back in England. Consequently, Governor Wanton repeatedly sent in troops to diffuse gatherings and nip any rebel activities in the bud. There were also heavy earthquakes in the Cape Cod Bay area – the strongest that had ever occurred in New England. But the so called “Red Gleaming” that happened on the night of the 13th April, which illuminated the nearby villages in an unnatural glow, left a special impression on the population. Towards the end of this memorable night a tremendous storm with a mysterious force swept across the land and brought a reek of rot and decay. With a final thunderclap and terrifying earthquake, the storm and gleaming were suddenly over.
Shortly after these events the first rumours circulated, speaking of a mysterious island elevated from the depths of the sea by the earthquake. At first the chroniclers dismissed this as the tall tales of drunken seamen, but more and more sailors spoke of a black isle with crags like fingers of a moldered hand reaching skywards.
As more and more information emerged, the first adventurous captains embarked on exploratory voyages. Those who returned reported outrageous tales of monstrous sea creatures and the humans who worshipped them. But many ships vanished entirely, never returning to their harbours. The uproar amongst the seamen grew with every week and finally Governor Wanton felt forced to investigate the wild stories circulating among the citizens of the harbour towns. Thus he ordered the experienced captain Leslie and his handpicked crew of hardy sailors, supported by a unit of soldiers, to explore this ominous isle and claim it for the British Crown.
